(binhdinh.gov.vn) - On the afternoon of September 23, at the Provincial People's Committee Office, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan had a working session with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Working Group in Vietnam led by Ms. Ramla Khalidi, UNDP Resident Representative in Vietnam; Mr. Shawn Steil, Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam on UNDP-funded projects in the province. Attending the meeting were Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tu Cong Hoang, representatives of relevant departments, Quy Nhon City People's Committee and Tuy Phuoc District People's Committee.

Speaking at the working session, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan expressed his pleasure to welcome Ms. Ramla Khalidi - Chief Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Vietnam and Mr. Shawn Steil, Ambassador of Canada to Vietnam to visit and work in Binh Dinh.
The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee said that UNDP is currently supporting the province to implement projects including: Vietnam - Korea Peace Village Project (KVPVP) in Binh Dinh; Piloting models of solid waste management and waste from the seafood industry to promote the Circular Economy in Quy Nhon city; Project "Smart coastal communities adapting to climate change in Vietnam - Binh Dinh province"; Project "Supporting the implementation of the National Action Plan on Ocean Plastic Waste in the context of Green Recovery after COVID-19 in Vietnam". However, due to the long approval process, the implementation has only now officially begun.

On behalf of the provincial leaders, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan thanked UNDP for its interest and support in investing and implementing activities, programs and projects that have contributed to the socio-economic development of the province over the past years, and affirmed that the province will always accompany UNDP to implement these 4 new projects. Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan hopes that UNDP in Vietnam will continue to pay attention to dedicating resources to support investment and development in Binh Dinh.
The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee also informed the Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam about the results of the Trade Promotion Conference with the Vietnam - Canada Business Association in Binh Dinh at the end of March 2024 and hoped that the Ambassador would continue to support connecting and introducing Canadian investors and businesses to Binh Dinh to learn about the investment environment and promote the implementation of projects. The province will create the best conditions for Canadian businesses to invest in sustainable and long-term business development.

Speaking at the meeting, Ms. Ramla Khalidi, Chief Representative of UNDP in Vietnam highly appreciated Binh Dinh's efforts and determination in implementing UNDP-funded projects and pledged to closely coordinate with the province to effectively implement the projects. Ms. Ramla Khalidi also said that the damage caused by storm No. 3 Yagi in the northern provinces further proves the need for more practical actions to improve the response and resilience of communities, especially coastal communities, to natural disasters. And women and children are the subjects that need special attention. That is also one of the contents that UNDP aims for when implementing upcoming projects in Binh Dinh. Ms. Ramla Khalidi also affirmed that in her role, she will do her best to ensure that the projects are implemented and promoted effectively as expected.

Mr. Shawn Steil - Ambassador of Canada to Vietnam said that through projects funded by UNDP, including the Project "Smart Coastal Communities Adapting to Climate Change in Vietnam - Binh Dinh Province", funded by the Canadian Government through UNDP, he had the opportunity to visit and learn more about Binh Dinh Province. The Ambassador was pleased with the determination to expand investment cooperation between Binh Dinh Province and Canada and promised to support the introduction of Canadian businesses to learn about the investment environment, promote the implementation of projects in Binh Dinh, and promote investment and trade cooperation between Canada and Binh Dinh.

At the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tu Cong Hoang and the focal agencies of the province, together with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Vietnam, discussed in detail the implementation of the projects.
With the technical assistance project "Smart coastal communities adapting to climate change in Vietnam - Binh Dinh province" by the Government of Canada through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province has approved the project documents, meeting the conditions to implement the next procedures. The project has 3 components implemented in some communes and wards of Quy Nhon city, Hoai Nhon town and Tuy Phuoc, Phu Cat, Phu My districts with a total capital of nearly 37,226,000,000 VND, the implementation period is 6 years, lasting until March 2030.

The pilot project on models of solid waste management and waste from the aquatic industry to promote circular economy in Quy Nhon City has been implemented by the People's Committee of Quy Nhon City (project investor) with activities such as: Organizing workshops; purchasing tools and equipment to support 200 fishing vessels participating in the model of collecting plastic waste from fishing vessels to shore, building plastic waste collection houses..., meeting the requirements and purposes of the project.

The Vietnam - Korea Peace Village Project (KVPVP) invested by the Department of Planning and Investment is implemented in 20 communes in Hoai Nhon Town and the districts of Hoai An, Tay Son, Tuy Phuoc, Van Canh, An Lao. Currently, the investor has carried out the main activities of the project, such as: Supporting agricultural materials, improved rice cultivation techniques to adapt to climate change; completing the construction of 66 storm- and flood-resistant houses, 1 medical station and implementing the construction of 6 medical stations in localities, ensuring the set progress.

The project supports the implementation of the national action plan on ocean plastic waste in the context of green recovery after Covid-19 in Vietnam, with the Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) as the project owner, and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment as the focal agency in Binh Dinh. The estimated budget for implementing the project activities in Binh Dinh is about 1 million USD. Currently, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment is continuing to coordinate with UNDP to complete the draft document to submit to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment for approval of the project, as a basis for implementation./.
